Hey, be nice. Some guys like that "ass sound."

The Digidesign POD. Hilarious.

I can just hear the "Classic Lead" patch in my head. Its sound sits comfortably between a malfunctioning-5150-with-a-delay and a complaining wife.

Incorrect. You could make AWFUL sounds that have fizzy distortion on them. Not awfully cool distortion sounds.

Depends on what you think is cool and what you think is ca-ca. Sometimes Ca-Ca is cool, right Sean? You should ask the Shadow what he thinks of this box.

If this is cool...I'd rather be a dork. Man, all these kids learning to play gtr will think that the sounds that come from a POD or this thing are what gtr tone is all about.

Sad. :(

Guys.....

I meant COOL, as a replacement word for SHITTY.

Capice?

I like to wreck shit, with terrible sounding equipment.

And the choir says "AMEN!!".

So, uh...can this thingy act as a dongle for PT? That'd be a neat trick.

Y'know, Digi oughta just make a box like that "Receptor" thingy. Let it run some plugs (preferably some kind of proprietary plug format), connect it up to the computer and let it talk to (and be controlled by) some DAW software, thus taking the processing load off the computer.

Er, oh. Wait. Nevermind.

I just don't understand why they did this...

The conversion on this unit cannot be THAT much better than taking a laptop and an Mbox or something to a gig. Also, I mean have they not been paying attention at all? Forget the fact that Line 6 has been doing this for years now, or that there's this company Fractal Audio making a modeling rack unit that absolutely kills this thing (sound quality wise), but I mean it's debatable if Eleven even stacks up to other SOFTWARE modelers like Revalver, or even the factory amp sims in Logic.

I just don't see what they're going for here, especially considering this thing hits and they STILL haven't directly addressed the Pro Tools/Snow Leopard issue yet.

but hey, it's orange, so that's kinda cool.

Digi was pushing PT8 based on the fact that 11 was the big, new, cool thang.

They probably had this hardware version in the works for a while. All companies are going down market due to the economy, Digi is just going downer...

This thing just might be one step up, or sideways, from Rock Band. Makes me wonder...if it actually has a jack for a Rock Band gtr????

dude don't say that...now that's what will happen.

weirder things have happened, like Gibson making a Jimi Hendrix strat (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Jimi-Hendrix.aspx)

what was it that Bill Murray said in Ghostbusters..."Dogs and Cats...living together"

I like at the end of the video where Dave talks about Digi "Taking it Back" (the apparently over-convoluted computer recording industry) for the musicians -

ya man, I always new that Digi was on my side - peace, love and the m-box:D

and, oh ya Dave, you do kinda seem like an easy whore in that video....

how do rockers get so "lite"???

It might not totally suck. Eleven can work really well when blended in with an amped track, and not having to worry about the processing can be handy. Plus, I can get rid of my POD for scratches now and get an orange box instead of red!

Total suckage is hard to come by.

But, Digi Seems to have the binary code for total suckage under lock and key.

I'd gather this device is woefully unimpressive. But then again, if you approach the box with ZERO expectations, it might not let you down if weren't expecting it to sound like something real.

26 Sep 2009, 23:16
Nice Ryan!! I knew (hoped?) there had to be positive side to this box....right????

Bottom line is that if you can't get a good gtr tone w/ a good player, instrument, amp, mic and pre (or even a good amp simulator)....then yes, you need this...I guess?

I'm tryin' here.

Really.

Well let's take the Metal world for instance (since I deal with it quite a bit and for no other reason), it's standard to do 4 layers of guitar per guitarist. This is usually incredibly time consuming to track (especially if there's significant editing involved) and is rarely done at a good studio (if one at all). This is a much nicer solution to be able to use this box as a PT interface, track the DI and sound (scratch as it most likely will be) then running through a POD or whatever other box and using MBox or 002 converters. A laptop and 2 RU vs another bag or two more spaces.

All that being said, it still might sound awful and be another waste but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Jay Fitz
26 Sep 2009, 23:39
There ya go, fair enough.

When you do give it a try, let us know how it worked out.

But, lets not let these musicians take the easy way out....pre-production is ESSENTIAL!! They should know their parts and be able to cut those parts 4x, in 4x the song length when the red light goes on.

Moral of the story: There is no excuse for being unprepared.

Guys, it looks like this unit could be revolutionary. Digi invented a new impedance. Its Space magic!

Eleven™ Rack is a revolutionary new guitar recording and effects processing system designed to eliminate the challenges guitarists have faced in the studio and on stage. Say goodbye to the lackluster guitar amp “models” of yesteryear: Eleven Rack utilizes a unique tone cloning design and one-of-a-kind, custom-designed True-Z input to re-create the experience of playing through a full guitar rig. By combining studio-standard Pro Tools® software with a DSP-accelerated high-resolution interface, Eleven Rack puts professional recording into the hands of every guitar player. Whether you’re tracking in the studio or playing on stage, Eleven Rack delivers fresh, mind-blowing, hyper-realistic guitar amp and effects tones that will inspire your best performances.

fair amount of time with Mesa Rectum-friers in the Metal scene,at welding volumes...very testing,to say the least..but once we get it right, right is right and tracking falls into place...

it becomes a there you go state of affairs..or sometimes not..or what the hell is this shit..or..or...

Sounds like the focusrite liquid technology's digitally controled adjustable impedance. Crap, and in no time it will be outdated by crapier sounding crap. There will be like 20 of these on craigslist in 3 months.

that promo language is just golden. i just liked this box better when it was called the "sans amp." It was silver and only 1RU then!

Or better yet, lexicon's signature 284, simulating amazing cranked amp sounds ...by being a cranked amp that fits in a rack.

I have a policy of reserving judgment on the sound of anything until I can actually hear / use it first, but I will say this much:

Their decision to put only put one mic pre on that baffles me. Sure, its primary target market is apparently geared towards guitarists who want to use it for double duty - live as well as for recording, and that's fine... although if you already have a HD or LE interface, you'll have to use it instead of that, or interconnect it just as you would with any other modeler (Axe-Fx, Pod, etc.); apparently you can't use it as a second interface in conjunction with another Digidesign interface... but if that's going to be their only interface, that single mic preamp makes no sense to me - after all, even guitarists might occasionally want to use a second mic pre for, I dunno - maybe recording a stereo acoustic guitar track? ;)

Whatever's clever, as long as it's ACTUALLY ABOUT RECORDING. NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHICH MIC PRE YOU THINK SUCKS.

I guess you should add: "But remember, when it comes to Digidesign, multi-page threads where the main subject is bashing Product X is totally cool".

Point taken, thread moved.

Yes, this thread is bashing...but maybe it's not exactly pointless or groundless bashing. They're toting a plugin in a 2U box, with what is probably one channel of the same A/D as their other LE interfaces, as THE REVOLUTIONARY END-ALL-BE-ALL GUITAR THING...ehhhhhhh....no.

Last month they were giving away POD Farm to iLok owners -- combine that with a good interface and I think you've got all the same bases covered for a lot less dough. After messing with it, it's a nice general-purpose effect but I'd still rather play through an amp (if possible -- right now I'm trying to record at 6:00 AM with my wife sleeping in the other room. POD Farm to the rescue...). It gets me about 80% of the way there, but there is a "fizziness" to the edges of the distortion that may or may not be desired depending on what you like and what you're playing.

I'll stick with my tube amps, ultimate attenuator and other goodies. Tubes Rule! The 11 Rack looks good cuz it is orange. Probably sounds good. The ipod was a horrible invention for audio... some of these all in one pieces make me think it is the ipod of the guitar. Ya know... lazy mans tone... whatever is easiest and hooks up via USB or Firewire. Not for me.
