Why yes...yes I can. I mean, sorta...
You may ask yourself, "Aren't there already enough recording and engineering and audio forums on the interweb?"
In short, NO.
There's a helluva lot of forums that are very equipment-centric, software-centric, everything-else-centric...very few are RECORDING-centric (note that I didn't say "none of them").
People torturing themselves over which mic preamp to buy to amplify the sound of blowing off their own head has NOTHING TO DO WITH RECORDING. I'M SORRY. IT DOESN'T.
We at Mercenary Audio created this forum to promote the discussion of RECORDING.
It'll be open-ended. You can talk about the awesome new and repeatable technique you fell back-asswards into, you can let us know how you deal with brass-bashing drummers who think they have 4 arms, you can drum up a discussion of using bleed and bad acoustics to your advantage...
Whatever's clever, as long as it's ACTUALLY ABOUT RECORDING. NO ONE CARES ABOUT WHICH MIC PRE YOU THINK SUCKS.
We hope this place will eventually become some sort of resource...or maybe just somewhere to go to kill an hour when Jay isn't looking. Be good and patient while we get the ball rolling, work out the kinks, so on and so forth...but hell...let's get started!
I'll keep this pseudo-welcome nice and short, and leave you all with a nice big ol' BT head.

Don't let Sean discourage you from eating a bullet and recording it with the finest preamplifier money can buy. You only live once ya know.

Hey Daedalus77,
Welcome to Move the Mics!
Rest assured, it was the entire Mercenary Crew who spawned the idea for this new hang, so as to BETTER to WWW. BIG THANKS to Dan and Reese for being Engineers too. They make our world spin. At any rate, we're here to help and glad to do it. Just don't ask Sean about Preamps, or me about Clocks, then shit could get ugly.

Hey guys, great news about the new forum - pretty burned out on the old GS (I finally cracked upon seeing another new sm7 post the other day). Hopefully the actual art of recording & engineering can get some traction. Let er Rip!

Fine...I guess we can talk about mixing, too. Reamping does (hopefully) involve moving the mics.
So yeah...start talking about recording. Not in this thread. Do it. That IS a threat.

God bless ye, gentlemen. I can piddle the boring hours away racking my post count back up to where it was on GS. How exciting.
My clients, in particular, will be pleased that I've found yet another way of talking about my job, instead of actually doing it.

BT MAKE YOU FEEL DIFF'RENT shirts were very limited (as in, there's one).
I tossed around the idea of starting the MAKE YOU FEEL DIFF'RENT clothing line. Shirts/hoodies/hats with my friends' heads.
Then I moved into Boston and that took all of my "do fun things" money away, immediately.

This is my first post ever on any forum. I have read a lot of threads, but never posted, and it’s been quite helpful as someone with little experience in studios other than my own project studio. However it is hard not to get caught up in consumerism when I would rather be learning techniques like mic positions. That’s why I decided to participate in this one. I really believe that for the most part audio engineering skills have been handed down from one engineer to another. Unfortunately, there is no engineer to hand anything down to me other then some salesperson trying to get me to buy a product they carry. That’s why I’m here, to better my technique.

The old "secret" is that if you just buy the frame and leave it empty, $100 bills come out of the edge connectors, ATM style, every 12 hours.

Is that the lunch box? Or the 10 space? purple or API? Which one do you recommend........

I would really recommend going with rackmount versions of this gear 'cos they have more headroom than the 500-series stuff.
Headroom, of course, is defined by the space between your lap and the steering wheel.

The Api 5B1 makes a great addition to any 500 series lunch box or rack, but some say it sounds a bit on the tinny side!

I am very grateful for this forum.
I can get to chat with like-minded individuals about doing the very thing that I love doing, not arguing the toss about the tools and technologies involved. I sincerely look forward to not having to fend off irrelevant arguments from inexperienced kids who think they know everything about which $150 Taiwanese large-cap is better or why [insert DAW of choice here] kicks the ass of [insert other user's DAW of choice here]. Or which amp simulator software sounds best... arrrgh!!!
Thank you fellas for providing this forum. I look forward to some very interesting discussions. :-)
Cheers,

This is really exciting! First forum I have ever been interested in actually registering for.
This is definately the best forum i've seen for actually learning, rather than "will my 200$ fostex rival PMCs?" kinda stuff. I've already learnt lots, especially from the pre production discussion.
Thanks for the awesome forum!!

Hello everyone! I'm glad to see that my favorite gear sellin' site has a forum and a purpose to steer the discussion toward the what and the why of recording. I've been recording all kinds of things for 30 years and getting paid to do it for 23, so I'll be happy to chime in when it seems appropriate.
I stumbled across the forum as I was on my way to send an email to the Mercenary staff regarding some advice on upcoming purchases. I think gear talk will always be part of the equation, but technique and creative ideas are a big part of the fun.
Anyway, great to be here,
Randy Gildersleeve

Wow Sandy, you pretty much nailed it on the head right there... So tired of the endless debates and futile battles that don't provide anything substantial but eye strain and a slow shake of the head.
I'm just honored to be in the presence of the road-worn chieftains of engineering and maybe, just maybe, provide some hope, that the next generation of engineers aren't ALL contributing to the sea of crappy mixes/recordings, dooming the future of any significant or real music. :D
I'm here to learn and keep the tradition and lost art of capturing music so someday I might be able to return the favor to future generations.. my kids won't have the luxury of taking their ears for granted, that's for sure!

This is awesome, but all I really want to know is what mic movement is best for hip-hop?
I had a lunchbox in 5th grade. If I'd have known that it would be so essential to getting good sound I would have hung onto it.
I can't wait to find out how to get "that million dollar sound" for under $100.
Most importantly I want to know what brand of beer sounds best when spilled on the console.
Just one thing, though...Can we please keep the sarcasm down to a minimum?
Maybe some kind of limiter...

S'up, Move the Mics?
The Mercenary dudes may vaguely recall me as I've been up to the space a few times. You sold me, on different occasions, a Lynx L22, FMR RNP and a RNC. Hung out for some Friday evening cocktails, got to drool over their studio and gear.
I run a little low-end rig, home studio style down Rhode Island way. Mostly software-based: dual-core WindowsXP, with Sonar, energyXT2 and a shitload of software. My outboard is the aforementioned FMRs, various low-end keyboards (think Alesis/Akai/Korg) and handful of good to awesome guitars.
I'm an old school guitar/bass player, post-punk kid who came up through college rock/indie rock in the 80s. When I started making music on computers at the start of this recently passed decade I came to appreciate the degree of skill involved with making 'electronica'. So mostly I make music that's combination of electronic and rock/folk based. I work a lot with a friend who's a hella a guitar player. Neither of us sing with any confidence so that's a problem. (Lots of instrumental tracks...).
Uh, so that's me, sorta... I like the idea of this place, and I know the Mercenary team to be stand up guys, genuine and friendly, and truly excited about good audio. So, I hope I'll have something to offer aside from inadvertently being a jackass. ;)
Oh, and... bthead

I was beginning to despair that there was anywhere that was more interested in the sound than the gear. After all, I couldn't give a fuck about a Grammy and I have accepted the idea that I will never win one.
I'm principally a guitarist. Formerly in cover bands in the 80s I quit music over personal matters (and a witch of an Ex-wife). Here I am 20 years later, all drama gone and I have the desire to see where I can get with my music now in a jaded generation of programmed drums, bass lines, pitch corrected vocalists, and of course, Britney Spears.
I'm not a gear slut, some of my stuff is supposed to suck, some of it does, but I like my Onyx 1220, my KRK Monitors, my G-Major and most of all my Engl Screamer 50 (with a half stack of V30s). My studio for the past 2 years has been based on a Zoom HD16 and some outboard gear. The most important thing I had learned is that cables matter and mike placement (in relation to room acoustics and source) is even more important. So is using more than one mike, and so is phase coherence (or lack of it).
Then I found this place. Oh Thank God!
