I found and old session on my computer of some drum recordings I did at pulsworks almost a year ago, Dec. 28, 2009 (i think)... Any way i thought i'd post these to get a little constructive criticism on my (perhaps lack-of) recording abilities...

The drummer is a friend of mine... the kit is a mapex Pro M with a Tama 13x3 picolo snare and my brother's 14x8 artwood custom snare. Iwas pretty spoiled with choices for my mics, (posted below) and actually i think this was my first recording job that i basicly did all on my own... :)

Signal Chain
Kik: Audix D6 - NPNG
Snare Josephson e22S - NPNG
Toms 1 and 2: 2x Audio technica ATM25 - NevePortico 5012
Tom 3 : Electro-voice Re-20 : Neve Portico 5012
Overheads: Cascade Fat Head or Beyer M160 - NPNG
Room: Shiny Box Ribbon ?? (ask Hardtoe*) - NevePortico 5012 maybe the Rooster pre... don't remember...

We were testing different overhead mics, so I can't actually remember which ones are one this recording. The other mics in the test were a pair of C42s.

* Gotta remember to thank Orion (Hardtoe, on the forum) for bring some mics and the Rooster pre up for the shoot out...

enough rambling, heres one of the test files... and the kit pictures

I can't believe no one as ripped you yet Zach. Just kidding. I'll rip you.

I need more context to evaluate what I'm hearing here. Is this just the OH's?

I am confused as to which Microphones am I listening to? All of them? But I'm tired and my reading comprehension is piss poor these days. Anyway - Is this The Cascade [figure eight] and the M160 [hyper], or the C42? I can't tell from the picture; but it looks like your using the C42 on the close Ride Side and then another for your triangular floor - is about all I can figure. I actually like using these that way; [without anything else supporting it] but I put the C42 pointing straight down at the kit dead center, and MUCH higher. However in a small room this is difficult. They are sometimes better suited behind the kit, possibly in X/Y which I find most pleasing with the C42. They have a very BIG sound for a SMALL condenser. These things have a pretty wide pickup in the front lobe, which is what I think makes it sound huge. There is a presence rise with this microphone and you should be aware of this and adjust the distance to suit the sibilant instruments as it is very fast and revealing of the transient material.

your listening to all the mics, I honestly can't remember which set of OH mics set we were using this time around. I think it was the M160s used for that test, cause we tested out the borrowed mics first (those aren't our C42s).

Do you need more info?

I should really post the link to all the snare samples we made that day too...

now I'm more confused than ever.

Maybe - Post a recent thing w/ better than average attention to detail on explanation about your technique and I'll rip it politely for you.

Ill post something more recent, were supposed to do another drum experimenting day soon, and then the studio "band" project will have some pretty decent material to critique...

once those are started I think me, Sandy and Brady will all be posting them. :D

The only hint im allowed to give is one working title, which is "Snapped to the Bar"
(copyright: sandyrb)

But first se have to be a little less busy, like that's gonna happen! ;)
