I apologize, I'm better at using gear than getting it to play nice together...
I want to slave a MOTU 828 to my Fireface so that I can still use RME's Totalmix (I just want the MOTU to give me 8 more in/out analog channels). Does anyone know the best way to do this?
firewire?
ADAT/optical?
Do I need to wordclock OUT from Fireface to wordclock IN on MOTU?
Any/all advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Did you set the MOTU to Stand alone Mode, where its analog in route to ADAT OUT and ADAT IN routes to Analog Outputs?
ADAT will be the way to interface the eight channels with your RME and use Total Mix and the DAW to Route the RME's Digital ADAT I/O.
If you connect this, its best to slave the MOTU via BNC word clock from the Output of the RME BNC word clock, but it will sync just fine from the ADAT inputs as well. When I use optical I pretty much always use external clock over BNC. Not sure on the Clock Termination spec on the Mark of the Uniform box....

Then that's the way I'll try do it - thanks :)
As for external clocking, my plan is to get the Fireface and MOTU modded by BLA, plus get their Microclock. For simplicity, and to avoid sending gear back and forth across the border from here in Winnipeg to Chicago, I'd rather just get the Lynx Aurora from Mercenary. However, gear has almost no resale around here and I don't/won't eBay so I think I'm stuck with upgrades...

You don't need any external clock for any of this hardware. In fact, clocking the RME anywhere else is kind of like "pissing in the wind" as it has its own jitter suppression circuit which "washes" the BNC clock inputs.

You mean I can't disable/bypass the Fireface clock? DOH! Oh well... doesn't sound that bad anyway. Thanks for the valuable piece of info, Adam!
