Hey all, as I said it's nice to be here and I hope to learn some stuff without having to wade through pages of bullshit to get what I was looking for.
First question, getting a mic inside a kick with no resonant side hole. How in the hell are you doing it?

Take the head off, cut the port with an X-Acto knife or just buy ahead with the port cut in it.
Or you could just leave it outside, but I'm assuming you don't like how it sounds as is. If you're using a D6 never put it on the outside of a kick, I had to do thiat for a metal drummer friend of mine, basically it sucked, the cymbal bleed was really loud and sounded like crap.

But what I'm saying is that I want a mic, in this case a beta 91 inside the shell, plus a LDC outside with NO hole in the reso head. Guy's talk about doing this with a "special" cable, maybe a cable of some sort through the vent hole on the shell?
Hope what I'm asking is a little more clear now.

This is probably going to end up in the tech. forum, but here goes. I've soldered custom cabling into kick drums before, using the vent holes. I'm trying to remember how the cable from the 91 works? I can't recall if it detaches from the body or not? I think not, which means it has a battery box in the middle of it that will not pass through, correct? At this point it may be easier to use one of the holes in the mounting hardware for the rack tom/toms and mount the arm somewhere else. usually those holes are at least 5/8 and may pass the box. As a last resort the hole in the shell at that location is even bigger, you could remove the mounting hardware all together. As a super last resort, if this is a set-up you intend to use live and alot, you could carefully drill a hole under the drum between the spur locations that will pass the cable and use the spur height to clear the cable. mount the 91 inside with super strong Velcro from the Depot to avoid constant head removal. I know it sounds drastic but it will not effect the sound or stability of the drum shell. It already has a crap load of holes in it. What type of shell/ hardware are you dealing with?

I'll second using the tom/mount hole, that seems lke the best way to me.
if you wanted this cable to be permanent, and still be able to use the tom mounts, you could take the xlr end off one side then run the cable through the vent, then solder it back on inside the drum. More drastic but it might work.

Cutting a small () in the resonant head is what I do, [usually the bottom left] IF I want to mike the inside of the drum, and the drum warrants me to mike the inside of it.
Otherwise I don't mike the inside drum, I mike the resonant head instead.
Though, I don't think its all that big of a deal to cut the head.
I think the reso head is still doing its job even if you put a small port in it.......

Exacto knives? That's too much work for me. Take a coffee can, get it hot (stoves work), press it onto the head. Done.
Coffee can is pretty much the perfect size. If you go much larger than that you might as well just take the head off.
Much of what people try to capture with "inside kick" mics can be had by putting a mic on the batter head. No holes required. Be sure to check polarity against the overhead (and other) mics in all cases.

Thanks to you all.
I've got it handled thanks to a short and productive call to Shure. Got part #'s and pin info to make a short permanent "pigtail cord" that's gonna go through the vent hole.
Some will say why? it's a pain in the ass, maybe so but to me anyway having a hole in either head is not what I want for this drum. I'll compare it to the difference between a ported speaker and an acoustic suspension/sealed speaker though not at all to that extent. Bottom line for me is that having a hole in the resonant head sounds different and for this particular drum not as good.
