View Full Version : Pro Tools LE 8 + Windows 7 64-bit

Hi, I'm Dan, and I use Pro Tools.

Or at least I did, until I built a new computer w/ Windows 7. Now it likes to give me the -6086 "H/W Buffer" error every 5 seconds w/ only 3 tracks playing.

Anybody had any success with this?

Obvious question, but are you using 8.03 (or whatever the lastest version is)? I think that's the only version that's supposed to work, but it's a bata version only, or something like that.

When I get a hardware buffer error usually, trying all the different buffer sizes will find one that works for a bit... then it stops again later.

Pro Tools is great when it works though! :D

Cheers,
Zach

Yes, 8.0.3. I've tried a bunch of different buffer settings to no avail.

Pro Tools is great when it works though!

Yeah, when it works. :moon:

Have you tired reverting back to Windows XP?

I know your being sarcastic, but 8.03 actually didn't work on XP for me at all.
All the previous one were good though...

I was being sarcastic without having the proper education about PT 8.0.3.

Good Luck Dan!

Interesting. I didn't upgrade to 8 until after I got Windows 7, so I didn't realize there were problems going the other way.

FWIW, my Delta 44 doesn't work in Windows 7 either, though it doesn't fail as spectacularly as PT. It only crackles out of the left side.

Lynx claims to have 64-bit Windows 7 drivers, so I'm stealing the Lynx TwoC out of Joe's computer to check it out at home tonight. No YouTube for Pires for a couple days.

Not only no YouTube, no capturing of opulence into Reaper!

Dan
11 Feb 2010, 23:27
Well, Joe, you may be in luck - PT seems to be behaving itself. I'm not sure exactly what I did, but it seems to have worked. Maybe it just needed to be burned it.

Edit: seems I may have spoken too soon...

Yeah, I thought my system was working too... It seems that Pro Tools doesn't like the Toontrack stuff on my PC. Yay.. more troubleshooting for me!
I'm getting a C++ Runtime error now, fark!

This isn't fun,
Zach

Well, the Lynx card seems to work ok and it sounds noticeably better than the Delta 44, even on youtube.

Dan,

Did you grab the Windows 7 device drivers? Digi kinda hid this somewhat on their page.

Dan

No, I didn't have those. Thanks!

Unfortunately, they didn't help. :poo:

I read somewhere that people had problems with IE8 & PT 8, so I tried uninstalling IE8.

BAD IDEA.

After that, PT would take eons to start up, the GUI was completely unresponsive, and the computer blue screen if I tried to force quit out of PT. It was reinstalling when I left the house this morning. :-b

I wasn't aware you even *could* remove IE8 from Windows 7. I know it's an option with XP/Vista.

Can you provide more details? You say you built the system; can you list make/model of pertinent hardware (mobo, proc, memory, hdd, video, etc)? Including your Digi interface.

CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM
Windows 7 Home Premium
ASUS EN9800GT (nVidia GeForce 9800 GT)
WD RE2 WD5000YS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive

That hd is not the system drive; it's data-only and performed just fine in that capacity in my last computer.

I was just digging aound on the DUC site try searching there if you haven't already

and here's a few help links I found:
http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=225984
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?query=6086
http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=219740&highlight=nvidia

The last one mentions something about nVidia drivers, might another thing to look at.

Hope this helps,
Zach

Hm, so you've got a USB interface. Are you plugging in to the front of your case, or to the back of your case? Strictly speaking, because of the wires used to connect the front-of-case USB ports, they are not to spec. During my time doing software test for an MP3 player, I learned that the front USB ports can cause problems syncing the device, etc.

Also check to make sure the ports are USB Hi-Speed enabled (rather than full-speed, which is USB 1.1 spec).

Back. Last time I tried, it wouldn't even work on the front.

I have a little M-Audio box that I use for SPDIF... the built-in converters sound HORRIBLE. Couldn't believe how harsh they sound. Ech.

Anyway, hows things in the land of 7?

I updated my office PC about a couple weeks ago... hate to say it, but everything is running great. Cubase, Sound Forge etc. My main DAW is still on XP and probably will be for life... but so far Win7 has been great for me aside from trying to get an 8 year old wireless PCI card to work.

Have you tried running and/or installing Toolz under the XP compatibility modes?

Little/no change. I saw that digi release 8.0.3cs1, but in the change notes, there was no mention of any of my problems, so I didn't bother with it. I'll wait until the next update comes out.

When I record, it's generally 1-2 tracks at a time w/ no overdubs. I haven't had problems during recording, only playback. Since the bulk of my work is with sound fx that are, at most, only a couple seconds long, the problems haven't been that much of an issue. When I started the thread, I had just recorded an hour-long chamber concert which was a PITA. If that comes up again, I'll just dump it into something else.

Have you tried running and/or installing Toolz under the XP compatibility modes?

I didn't, though I vaguely remember reading something about that being a bad idea. Don't remember why.

Good news & bad news... just saw this on TGP.

No. I'm using it with ProTools. It worked fine with PT 8.0.1, and 8.0.2, but when PT updated to 8.0.3 and included support for Windows 7 and IE 8, they inadvertently broke the driver connection that made that work. I've asked this on the Propellerheads web site, and on DUC, and sent a tag into M-Audio and Digidesign, and there is no reply regarding a suggested fix.
