View Full Version : What is the best Config for using Outboard Gear with ProTools?
I'm running Protools 7.3 LE with Rack 002.
I'm looking to find the best configuration to patch over to some outboard gear, both in tracking and post production (FX, Better Comp, Re-Amping).
For Post production I know I could bus of a different output (on my 002), and patch to the outboard gear, then back in to the 002 and record it to a different track. Is this the best way?
For Tracking, how to I overcome Latency issues?

That's the best way i've seen it done, just make sure to have a way to aligh the pre-recorded track and the processed track. Just is a little burst of noise or something. I think Audiosuite has the signal generator with would work.

The best way to overcome latency when tracking is using a console and using the aux. sends to create the headphone feeds. But, it's rude money for a good console, especially if you're a hobbist. Though those Toft ATB boards do look pretty cool... With outboard gear there is little added latency if it's pactched in between your pre and the converter, as long as you aren't using the built-in pres. If you do use the 002 pres I'm not sure what you could do, other than add the processing all during the mix
Hope this helps,
Zach

you may have already tried but lower your buffer size.

Under the "Operations" menu, select "Low Latency Monitoring". This lowers latency to an unnoticeable level, but disables any effects plugins and aux/bus sends.
ya, i knew about the Low Latency Monitoring, but i depend on bussing for my headphone mixes. i think the next option will be an analogue board to run headphone mixes through. or ProTools HD.... neither is in my budget right now

For headphone mixes you could always get something like a used 1402... Probably wouldn't cost much.

You must use the Monitor Path of the Digi Box, which I think is the best way for no latency cue. Buffer size and issues get in the way, so its best to use the on board monitor path.
With Mixing OTB, and wanting to insert outboard equipment, I recommend the Dangerous DBOX, which I think hot rods your interface and offers a whole boat load of beneficial attributes for an interface with Eight outputs and a SPDIF output.
