Here is a question for anyone about the intellectual property of the acoustics of a space or reverb unit. Lets say i take an impulse of a reverb unit or a acoustic space to sell it, would i need the express permission of the architech or manufacture. If so do you think they would want a royalty or something along those lines?

i dont know the correct answer to this i'm just speculating. i would think if you paid an engineer to design you a space and its yours you can do what you like with it. but if you took a fulltone tube tape echo and sold an impulse response you would have a problem.

You need to think about what domain the intellectual property would exist in. Is it trademark? For you to infringe on anything, the originator would first have to have gone through the process of legally trademarking the work. A difficult, expensive and slow process. In this case, it would need to proven that it constitutes an original "signature" and no-one else could have, or has achieved the same results independently. Sounds to me, unless I'm missing something, that it would be un-enforceable. I would think that something like a reverb sound would be the by product of a patent or trademark, not the protected work itself. Is it Karmically uncool? only you can answer that. e-mail a law student who is interested in intellectual property rites, it sounds like an interesting problem.
