Have you heard this one before?
I'm debating updating/building a proper home studio...and was hoping you heavies can weigh in on resources for building, design, etc. and maybe steer me towards some designers that are interested in smaller (let's say 1,000sf), control, live, iso booth design. I love all my gear to this point, but my 7ft basement ceilings don't seem to do it justice...
thanks guys

Good day...
I like these books: "Recording Studio Design" by Philip Newell. "Master Handbook of Acoustics" by Alton Everest... Great knowledge even if you are planning on having someone else do the design/build. 1000sf total? just curious....

Thanks Tomasz! sounds like a good start. and yeah, the 1000 sqft is what i'm working with now
Although I'm new to this forum, I'm not new to studio design on a budget or internet forums. Low ceilings are tough to make go away but i may be able to help you with other aspects.
Here's a link to my studio (it's 1000 sf too) site: http://www.elevatedbasement.com
If you want more of a "known quantity" Wes LaChot does great work, unlike some of the big names IMO.

cool studio Fibes...and thanks for the response...I had a few in depth conversations with wes. He's helpful, honest, patient and beyond knowledgeable...but with these traits comes his price tag. certainly not shocking prices, but definitely in the realm of professional high end studio. More than I could justify for a private creative space, that is occasionally booked for outside sessions.

are you considering building new from scratch or in an existing structure?
And what kind of production work do you do/ rock, voice over etc ?
Do you need/want to be able to track a whole band in the live room?
Just some things to consider.
Also another decent book on this subject is: "Sound Studio Construction On A Budget" by Alton Everest... It's older but the principles remain...

mostly rock and some acoustic singer/songwriter as well.
would love to have space for 4 or 5 players to track live. with additional ISO/dead room for overdubs, VO, etc. I'm a film/video editor by trade so i've ended up using my existing gear for video post, audio for video post, foley, etcetcetcetc
As with anything, you get what you pay for and compromises had to be made on my space (I rent) but the fact I'm an architect, 25 year studio veteran and have designed and built several studios, the bang for the buck factor is amazing on this one. 10,000 in materials including wiring and faceplates.
The labor factor was elbow grease and trade which made costs come way down.
john sayers does studio design of all sizes and will work within budgets. www.johnlsayers.com
