I'm curious here, has anyone captured music in stereo while also using a Jecklin disk? I've been reading a little about it, but I figured I'd see if any of the MTM folks had experiences to share. So far when I've captured things with a stereo pair of microphones, I tend to lean toward an ORTF setup (mostly because of the all the stereo arrangements I've tried, I liked the sound of this one the most), but if the Jecklin disk can make a positive difference then I'd really like to experiment with one.

eager to hear your thoughts and experiences...

I think it yields a very spacious sound, in fact one of the biggest stereo images I've ever heard, with or without the Jecklin disk (I know technically that's two different techniques). But I think having some kind of isolation between the mics is essential when they're close together, anywhere near the inter-aural distance because you can get some phasey crap going on, but less so when they're further apart. This being said, when your mics get further apart the image tends to get unrealistic with a "hole in the middle" kinda sound. Anyway, I like the Jecklin disk approach, but obviously it doesn't work for everything.

I also like the ORTF setup you mentioned and I tend to use that for large ensembles like choirs. Then I usually go M&S for bass cabs and stuff.

Cheers,
Sandy.

I wonder where else I can get one besides that expensive one Josephson makes...

I mean realistically what does it even have to be made out of?

We built one. I think it's 3/4" or 1/2" MDF, about a foot in diameter and has foam on each side. Nothing exciting but it does the trick.

Actually we originally made it for recording pow-wow music (quite popular in our part of the world). The idea was to hang it above the gathering drum in a horizontal orientation with something good for the drum attached below and a Blumlein set above to capture the singers. But then the client mushroomed out on us so it became a Jecklin disc.

Anyway I digress. It should be dead easy to make something workable and cheap too. :)

Cheers,
